What is the ideal profile of an MPB planting leader?

Find out what some qualities our planting leaders possess!

Ensuring the planting of pre-sprouted seedlings with high quality and homogeneity is one of the challenges faced by operation leaders.

With this, we at Agricef train our planting leaders daily to ensure maximum efficiency and performance throughout the process.

But after all, what qualities do our leaders possess?

In reading below, you can see 8 main characteristics that an MPB planting leader needs to have. Check it out!

The planting leader is responsible for supervising the teams and equipment involved in planting and irrigation. Due to their constant presence in the field, it is essential that a good leader has the ability to manage interpersonal relationships, ensuring that problems are resolved through efficient communication.

To clarify more about the topic, we spoke with Henrique Pigatto Rodrigues, Field Operations Manager at Agricef, who has more than eight years of experience in field operations and coordination of agricultural leaders who manage MPB (pre-sprouted seedlings) sugarcane plantations in different regions of Brazil.

Rodrigues highlights that the role of leader is not simple. He explains that, during operations, many challenges arise and that the leader needs to be flexible, taking corrective actions when necessary, to ensure that the agreed results are achieved.

“Todos os anos nós enfrentamos muitas dificuldades nos plantios, mas sempre conseguimos entregar da melhor maneira possível ao cliente.” – Henrique Rodrigues, Gerente de Operações de Campo da Agricef –

So, what are these characteristics of a good planting leader?

Emotional Management

To maintain a good bond with the customer, the leader must have effective communication skills, capable of guiding the customer in crucial decisions and operations planning. Furthermore, it is essential to have the ability to recognize potential conflicts and act as an intermediary in a conciliatory manner, whether with the team or directly with the client.

Effective communication

Communication is not just about what you say, but what the other person can understand. The leader must be concerned with transmitting messages clearly and directly, ensuring that all members of his team understand his instructions.

Machinery management

Responsibility for the correct use and functioning of equipment and machines rests with the coordinator. Therefore, the planting leader needs to have a good understanding of the equipment they work with and know how to get the best performance out of them.

Decision Making

Responsibility for decision-making often falls to the planting leader, especially in unusual situations. However, as in any work environment, there is an organizational structure that must be respected. It is up to the leader to act with discernment, making decisions in line with the guidelines already defined or that will be determined by their superiors, always treating those they lead with respect.

Collaborative empathy

The leader needs to work alongside his team, acting as a true partner, always making an effort to understand the difficulties faced by the members and taking the necessary measures to facilitate the execution of the group's tasks.

Organization

A well-structured team can carry out plantings much more efficiently and calmly. Therefore, the leader must plan the steps and distribute tasks among members in a balanced manner, avoiding overloading employees and, thus, minimizing problems that may arise throughout operations.

Balance

A leader must be flexible to adjust to different circumstances, maintaining balance and resilience in the face of any challenge that arises.

Agility

The leader must always be prepared to act quickly, aiming to achieve success. When planting, there are always changes and unforeseen events, so it is essential to have agility to identify priorities and make the right decisions at the right time.

With these characteristics, our leaders are able to guarantee the planting of high quality pre-sprouted seedlings, with great efficiency and performance.
