The pre-sprouted seedlings (MPB) system was created in an innovative way by the Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC) of Unicamp. Introduced around 2008, this method allows for accelerated multiplication of sugarcane seedlings, reducing stalk consumption from 18 to 20 tons per hectare in conventional planting to just 2 tons when using MPB seedlings. This means that around 18 tons that would be discarded as “saplings” can be converted into ethanol, electricity or sugar.

The MPB system allows the selection and treatment of buds removed from sugarcane, which later originate the seedlings, ensuring healthier plants. This is an improvement over the traditional method, which favored the spread of diseases in Brazilian sugarcane fields due to inadequate treatment of the stalks. In this way, the selection process provides a more productive, profitable and disease-free planting. Another advantage of pre-sprouted seedlings is that they can be planted with more modern machinery and accessible, through planters, allowing the mechanized planting of sugar cane. For producers who prefer more traditional methods, it is still possible to plant manually using planter ratchets.

With results up to 20 times better, the use of MPB seedlings reduces planting failures, as it ensures that the seedlings are of good quality and well developed. This makes the replanting process faster and more economical.

Furthermore, sugarcane producers can adopt MPB for planting mother lines in the Simultaneously Occurring Intercalary-Rotational Method (MEIOSI), preventing the spread diseases such as Giant Drill (Sphenophorus Levis). MEIOSI consists of planting part of the sugarcane reform area in an alternating manner, using own production to complete the rest of the area. During this period, the area can be used for other short-cycle crops, such as peanuts and soybeans.
